Story

THE PROJECT

Hello world! We’re the Wendy Clark Band and I'm a group here in the beautiful city of Denver, CO.

Our band was formed in 2011 after Wendy’s first project, Tequila Mockingbird. We are a Colorado-based rock band. The name and the band members have changed over the years, consequently the sound and the groove and the energy. Wendy was tackled by Chris Coward in 2015 and her ability to jump right in and be her partner was what she was looking for since her first band in 1987 – a true comrade who brought the joy of playing with a solid lineup into light and we still get better every time we play. We get to perform our own songs as well as our obscure covers for our fanbase, who all want a new record from us. We describe ourselves as retro-futuristic new wave rock, but really we are genre-defying Americana powerpop with diverse influences. Wendy comes to the table with three critically acclaimed albums and a history of extensive performances, and has played with Denver’s finest.  She has played with her heroes, and has played for sold-out shows for Dr Hook, Roger Clyne, The Samples, Carolyn Wonderland, and places like Invesco Field, the Pepsi Center, Fiddler’s Green, Taste of Colorado, Best of Colorado, People’s Fair, and has traveled for shows throughout Colorado, New Mexico, and Wyoming.

The material is ready, and the musicians are waiting -- this Plaid Dog campaign is the final step toward creating our new, professionally produced studio album.

WHAT YOU'RE SUPPORTING

This campaign is raising funds for our professionally recorded album with Ryan Gallagher in Boston, MA. Ryan is a seasoned Boston-based producer and engineer with experience working with both established and up-and-coming musicians. Together, we are digging into our original material, writing arrangements, and reaching out to local musicians to bring the songs to life.

We’ve been able to cover the costs of recording and producing one song, which is ready for you to check out right here on this page. This first song is called “60 Songs,” and you can check it out below!

While I’ve been able to fund the recording process for "60 Songs” on my own, to create an album of songs of this quality, studio costs add up quickly. With that said, this campaign can give us a unique opportunity to collaborate and make great art together. Your donation will cover the following costs of my project:

1. Pre-Production: This is where everything starts. Ryan and I will start crafting the arrangements for each song slated for the album. We’ll hold rehearsals to fine-tune the songs and arrangements and talk through new and exciting ideas for how to approach the recording process.

2. Recording: This is when we enter the studio and start capturing the music and where the songs become what you'll hear on this album. This campaign will play a huge role in making sure we have enough time to capture great performances for every member of the band.

3. Mixing & Mastering: Each track will get mixed to create the right balance between instruments, texture and color that make up a track. As a final step, the album will be mastered from beginning to end so that the listening experience is cohesive and carefully choreographed from start to finish.

THE IMPACT

It's hard to express how much this project would change my life.

From Wendy: Hard work and more hard work is what life as a local composer/singer songwriter is. The confidence comes by surrounding yourself with your favorite people who I get to hit the stage with, and who make me sound good.  Making great music is a process – it’s a full time labor of love and we are lucky to play our own songs and select covers and not feel like we have sold out. I get to play my newest and the best songs I have ever written with my best friends.

My parents are both pro musicians and have no idea or desire to write a song, but I wrote my first heartbreaker at eleven, and played piano then started a high school rock band. The mental stamina and the instant dopamine explosion on stage was when I learned how fun it was to make people happy without having to conform, and it was in my DNA after growing up watching my parents every day – practicing or performing in some capacity. It was something I had to try and like them, I did it, and never stopped except for that college vacation.

From Chris:  After moving to Denver in 2015 after playing music in Philadelphia, New York and North Carolina, I was on the hunt for my Colorado music project.  I saw Wendy at an open mic and was blown away by her performance and her original songs.  She had a bass player at the time so I offered to play with her if anything changed or she started a new project.  Two months later I jumped in to cover for her bass player and we’ve been playing together now for eight years.  If you know me,  you know how much playing music means to me as I’ve been doing it since I was a child.  I especially love playing with a band (I am the bass player after all) and the magic of performing for others.
