Hello world! My name is sparrowsong and I'm a singer-songwriter here in the beautiful city of Boston.

My musical journey has taken place all over the United States, between studying music in Ohio, getting into bluegrass in Telluride, and recording a covers album with a bandmate from Pittsburgh. That journey continues right here in Boston. I’ve been playing open mics in Jamaica Plain, auditioning for bands, playing any local events that will have me, jamming at the Record Co, and sampling all the porchfests that this city has to offer. Now, I’m ready to share all that this musical journey has taught me with all of you.

The material is ready, and the musicians are waiting -- this Plaid Dog campaign is the final step toward creating my first ever, professionally produced studio album.

This campaign is raising funds for my professionally recorded album with Ryan Gallagher in Boston, MA. Ryan is a seasoned Boston-based producer and engineer with experience working with both established and up-and-coming musicians. Together, Ryan and I are digging into my original material, writing arrangements, and reaching out to local musicians to bring the songs to life. 

We’ve been able to cover the costs of recording and producing one song, which is ready for you to check out right here on this page. This first song is called “Library Juliet” and you can check it out below!

While I’ve been able to fund the recording process for "Library Juliet” on my own, to create an album of songs of this quality, studio costs add up quickly. With that said, this campaign can give us a unique opportunity to collaborate and make great art together. Your donation will cover the following costs of my project:

1. Pre-Production: This is where everything starts. Ryan and I will start crafting the arrangements for each song slated for the album. We’ll hold rehearsals to fine-tune the songs and arrangements and talk through new and exciting ideas for how to approach the recording process.

2. Recording: This is when we enter the studio and start capturing the music and where the songs become what you'll hear on this album. This campaign will play a huge role in making sure we have enough time to capture great performances for every member of the band.

3. Mixing & Mastering: Each track will get mixed to create the right balance between instruments, texture and color that make up a track. As a final step, the album will be mastered from beginning to end so that the listening experience is cohesive and carefully choreographed from start to finish.

My music has always been a vulnerable thing. Songwriting is my way of making sense of a lot of complicated emotions, so the idea of creating an album has always felt incredibly personal. I’ve been afraid to allow others into the creative process of bringing them to life. That’s like letting someone read your diary! But with Plaid Dog, I feel comfortable enough to make this album a collaborative thing. I’ve gained the confidence I need to let other talented musicians in, and that’s why this album is finally happening.

I’m hoping that after this album, I’ll be able to share even more of my music, both with other musicians and with wider audiences. I’ve spent some time talking with local musicians, and I’ve found some people that I’d love to write with in the future. The best and most unexpected things always happen when you’re working with someone new. I’m also hoping that this album will let me connect with wider audiences, ideally through live performances. While having my songs on streaming services is amazing, the truly special part of being an artist is when you get to talk to the people that listen to and support you. Performing has always been where my heart lives, as vulnerable as it may be, and this project could lead to more opportunities for it!

In the name of opening up even though it’s scary, I’ll share one more thing with you. There’s a drawing in an old journal of mine that I made when I was a kid. It’s a picture of who I wanted to be in the future, and in that picture, there’s an artist with curly hair and a guitar sitting next to a book of her own songs. Every time I look back at it, I can’t help but think that the drawing looks an awful lot like me now. This album is for that kid version of me. I want to show her that we did it all!
