Overview

Friends, family, loved ones, and any other beautiful humans who might be reading this… hello and welcome! If you don’t already know, my name is Mariah Glenn, and I’m a singer-songwriter pianist living amongst the oak trees of Raleigh, North Carolina. To kick this off short, sweet, & swiftly, let’s begin with a brief backstory. Music has been a part of me since the day I was born. And I’m not kidding—my first word was technically not even a word. My first vocalization as baby Mariah was just a shockingly clear, mumbled rendition of the Barney theme song in almost perfect pitch (well, that’s what my dad claims). Fast forward to my teen years…I’m a tap dance teacher, and I am obsessed with singing when I’m alone. One night, I mustered up the courage to sing at an open mic, and somehow it almost immediately turned into vigorously gigging 4 times a week with an acoustic guitar player. It paid the bills, so I did this for almost 11 years until I decided I didn’t want to rely on a guitarist anymore. My boyfriend Seth believed in me more than anyone ever had, so he surprised me with a Yamaha keyboard. In order to perform solo gigs, I needed to learn how to play an instrument. So, needless to say, the keyboard came in handy. I’ve now been teaching myself how to play on that keyboard for 3 years and continue to surprise myself. In summary, I ditched the guitarist as soon as I felt ready, and I’ve now performed over 50 gigs solo - just me and the keys. Freedom at last! For a while it was a struggle because of chronic nerve pain and depression working against me to hold me back, until I started to realize that the more energy I put into my music, the more my pain and mental health improved. The feeling I get when I perform for a crowd, knowing I’m self-taught and have written over 50 songs all on my own, really solidified it for me: music is more than a passion—it’s what I want to do forever. Yes, for the rest of my life. It’s a no-brainer.

The more I sat at my piano and wrote songs, the more I fell in love with the idea of sharing my art with the world. I’m so incredibly proud of the songs I’ve written, and I've never felt so confidently ready to take this next big step! …But first, I need your help.

My songs are ready to be recorded, the studio time is booked, and my producer Carter is ready to rock & roll. This Plaid Dog campaign is the final step toward creating my first ever professionally produced studio EP, and it’s been a long time comin’ for me

This campaign is raising funds for my first professionally recorded EP with Carter Sanders in Boston, MA. Carter is a Boston-based producer / engineer who has experience working with both established and up-and-coming musicians. Together, Carter and I are digging into my original songs, writing musical arrangements, and constructing the instrumentals to finally bring my songs to life.

We’ve been able to cover the costs of recording and producing one song, which is ready for you to check out right here on this page. This first song is called “I Hate Myself (When I’m With You),” and you can check it out below!

While I’ve already been able to fund the recording process for "I Hate Myself (When I’m With You),” to create an entire EP of songs of this quality, studio costs add up quickly. With that said, this campaign can give us a unique opportunity to collaborate and make great art together. Your donation will cover the following costs of my project:

1. Pre-Production: This is where everything starts. Carter and I will start crafting the arrangements for each song slated for the EP. We’ll hold rehearsals to fine-tune the songs and arrangements and talk through new and exciting ideas for how to approach the recording process.

2. Recording: This is when we enter the studio and start capturing the music–where the songs become what you'll hear on this EP. This campaign will play a huge role in making sure we have enough time to record and create my vision for each song.

3. Mixing & Mastering: Each track will get professionally mixed to create the right balance between instruments, texture, and color that make up a track. As a final step, the EP will be mastered from beginning to end so that the listening experience is cohesive and carefully choreographed from start to finish. ‘Choreographed’ has a double meaning here–did I mention I’m a tap dancer? That’s a bit of an Easter egg for you.

It’s so difficult to express how much this project would impact and change my life. Pursuing music professionally is what I’ve chosen as my life-long career, through better or worse, but I haven't had the resources or funds to make it happen yet.
