Hello world! My name is Abby Slocum, and I'm a singer-songwriter here in the beautiful city of New York.

I’ve been making music since the age of 4, when I walked into my very first piano lesson. Since then, I’ve made sure to have music all around me at every moment; from playing the alto-sax for the school band, singing in the choir, performing in musicals, and even secretly composing my own music in my bedroom. I decided to take a break from my theatre career as my mental health was suffering. When the world flipped upside down, the time on my hands gifted me with a revived passion for songwriting and allowed me the freedom and healing I’d been missing. I want nothing more than to share these songs with you, in hopes they will reach someone that needs to hear them. 

The material is ready, and the musicians are waiting -- this Plaid Dog campaign is the final step toward creating my first ever, professionally produced studio album.

This campaign is raising funds for my professionally recorded album with Bryan Fennelly in Boston, MA. Bryan is a Boston-based producer and engineer with experience working with both established and up-and-coming musicians. Together, Bryan and I are digging into my original material, writing arrangements, and reaching out to local musicians to bring the songs to life. 

We’ve been able to cover the costs of recording and producing one song remotely, which is ready for you to check out right here on this page. This first song is called “Fig Tree,” and you can check it out below!

While I’ve been able to fund the recording process for "Fig Tree" on my own, to create an album of songs with full production and studio quality, costs add up quickly. With that said, this campaign can give us a unique opportunity to collaborate and make great art together. Your donation will cover the following costs of my project:

1. Pre-Production: This is where everything starts. Bryan and I will start crafting the arrangements for each song slated for the album. We’ll hold rehearsals to fine-tune the songs and arrangements and talk through new and exciting ideas for how to approach the recording process.

2. Recording: This is when we enter the studio and start capturing the music and where the songs become what you'll hear on this album. This campaign will play a huge role in making sure we have enough time to capture great performances for every member of the band.

3. Mixing & Mastering: Each track will get mixed to create the right balance between instruments, texture and color that make up a track. As a final step, the album will be mastered from beginning to end so that the listening experience is cohesive and carefully choreographed from start to finish.

It's hard to express how much this project would change my life.

For a very long time, I was too afraid to share my own writing with anyone. It’s a strange thing to take a piece of yourself and put it on paper, and present it to the world. However, if this past year and a half has taught me anything, it is that there is simply not enough time to sit around and wait for something to happen. Through the endless support from my friends and family, the guidance from fellow musicians, and that persistent, tiny voice in my heart that says “You must!”, for the first time in my life, I am feeling courageous enough to offer my songs and stories to the world, to share them with those who wish to listen.

This album is a scrapbook of what I’ve gathered so far, about the fragile and fleeting nature of living, those quick and beautiful moments that are impossible to name, the battle against being afraid, the love for those around you, and the love you finally find for yourself. This music has been floating around between my head and heart for a long time, and the opportunity to release it from my journal and into your ears would mean more to me than I can possibly convey. As human beings, our time on Earth is spent seeking connection and reason. I am hoping that this project will grant me a connection with more wonderful people, and I know that recording this album will be my reason. With my entire heart, I want to thank you for taking the time to read, listen, and for considering donating to this project. It means more to me than you could possibly know.
